Watching Paint Dry, and Other Stuff

 We went to town three
different days last weekend
to choose a paint color
 for our front/dining/kitchen room.
It's all one big room
with that 22 foot open beam ceiling...
Um yeah, that's a huge blotch of color
to worry about.
We've been living with white walls forever.
All of our Navy housing walls were white.
Our rented house off base in the Bay Area
had white walls.
When we bought our first home,
we painted the walls white.
At that time we just couldn't commit to
any certain color.

We've lived with white walls here
for 12 years, but now that's changing.
I wanted color and it has to be warm, cozy
and evoke the feel of a cabin in the woods.

We slathered on some big  blotches of color
from the sample jars and then literally watched
paint dry to see if we were in agreement on which
color to choose.  We started out way too dark,
but finally figured it out.
We made a decision,
lived with it for a day and then bought paint,
and started working on our latest project.
We wanted to get the inside window frame/sills
painted before the window construction resumes.

Um yeah, that project still isn't done.
Never mind though,
it will get done... it just has to.
By Thanksgiving I'm beginning to think.
It's been a stressful month.
We stood our ground with the construction
project coordinator who came up from
Sacramento to see what we were unhappy
with. He agreed with us that they
need to reorder the two largest windows.
Now we wait to find out when the windows
will be ready, IF they have even been ordered yet.
Seems like the guy handling the order from the
manufacturer is out on sick leave or something.
They haven't been paid yet, so there's hope.Yikes!

The furlough worries are temporarily over
which is a huge relief.  Yet there's still the threat
that this could happen again in January
and that is just downright unnerving.

Our family member in Oregon
that has been so sick, was in the hospital
again and this time we couldn't get over there
to see what we could do to help.
Rick wasn't allowed to take time off
from work, because of the furlough rules
that essential employees stay on the job.
No sick leave, family medical leave,
or even vacation time was to be taken
without disciplinary actions occurring.
Now that just plain wrong.

The latest Liberty news:
She chewed up Rick's eye glasses.
They fell out of his soft sided briefcase
on the porch
a couple weeks ago, and Rick didn't
realize it until he got to work.
He called to see if I could find them,
and sure enough there was our little
girl chewing on the leather case that
the eye glasses were in.
At first I thought there was hope that
the glasses were still safe inside,
but that wasn't the case.
She had already chewed up the eye glasses.
She also found his little Swiss knife
and chewed that up as well.
His pant pockets loose all kinds of stuff
into his recliner chair, and of course
Liberty loves getting up on  her his chair
for a cozy nap.

Here she is stealing strawberries from under
the garden fence.  She also ate my one and
only summer squash that grew on her side
of the fence this summer.
It was there one day, and gone the next.

The good news:
We changed the way we get our internet.
We've had the new system about three weeks now,
and it's so nice with no more worries
about going over the limit at the end of every
month.  There's no overage charges,
 and it's half the cost
of our previous provider. (Verizon)

Now we can watch videos, and movies,
and whatever we want online!

We did have to cut down a few of our trees
to create a clear line of sight to some tower
or something over on another hillside.
We will be using that wood for next winters
firewood, so although we feel bad about
the trees we won't let cutting them down
  be a wasteful thing.

We also stopped our Direct TV
and so far the only thing I miss is
having the local news on first thing
in the morning.

Most of our favorite shows
can be watched online a day
later than the original showing.
That's not so bad.

I have to actively search for the news
online and I do check several sources to
get a well rounded view of what's going on.

Hopefully this weekend we will get
a bit more done on the paint job...
oh what have we done starting a huge
project like this.
My "great room" for lack of a better word
is so torn up and messy with paint cloths
everywhere and furniture out of sorts.
Yikes.
This weekend is also busy because
of a potluck at Seniors, and then
the American Cancer Society Tea
on Sunday.  I'm completely ready for that.
Everything is packed and ready to go.
I think.

Take care and have a great weekend.

  1. Oh my...Liberty is on the bad list....when they are good they can be very, very good and when they are bad, oh can they be bad...hahahaha! My dog Hyko, got a hold of my retainer to keep from grinding my teeth at night. He must have thought it was a bone....not sure why he did that, cause he never did something like that again. Hope you get your painting jobs done, you will enjoy it once it is done and probably look for another wall to paint. LOL

Between the stress of the windows and furlough worries and a sick relative.....was good to take a cup of tea to relax..........how was that tea, I saw it at the store today and wondered how it tasted?? Have fun at your Senior potluck and Cancer Society Tea.....take a break!!!

    1. I really like that tea. It doesn't have a strong cocoa flavor, just mild with a nice mint flavor. It's my favorite tea lately.

  2. Well I thought we were bad with our off white walls for 6 years! We still have the living room/dining room/kitchen area to paint. Going to put up chair rail and crown molding since the master bedroom turned out so nice. Decided not to put up wainscoting in the living room since not a lot of the walls show. That will save a few bucks! So you guys gotta go thru this furlough crap again? Ugh! I haven't bothered checking out my case online at SS regarding my disabled claim. Figured no one was working on anything any way. Getting colder here now daytime. Camper is covered and when we get back from our TX run the boat will get done. Sigh. Didn't get to go out on the boat when we had the nice weather Chuck and Joe were putting the metal roof on the outbuilding. Chuck had to do some prep work prior to putting on the metal. Think he just has to buy some trim pieces for front and back and he is done. Loved your house but wouldn't want to paint it inside! Hope it gets done soon. We plan to finish our painting this winter. Next project closet organizers for the 3 closets. We found what we want at Lowe's that 10% military discount helps some.

    1. Hi Cathy, Social Security remained open during the furlough and they worked all the while wondering when and if they would get paid. What's hurting the length of time to get claims processed is the number of people filing for any type of help they can get since so many have lost their jobs during the economic down turn. This includes many people trying to get disability SSI who don't even qualify, but they're desperately trying anyway. There are also all of those Baby Boomers hitting retirement age. Another problem: They haven't hired anyone to replace workers who have retired, or quit in the past 4 years due to budget cuts, so there are fewer workers to handle a larger work load. The stress levels are increasing. It doesn't help that politicians used the Federal workers as pawns in their fight. ugg.... It's not over because now there's new deadlines to think about. January 15, and February 7.
Yes we bought our paint at Lowe's and used the military discount as well. It covers the state taxes and a little bit extra. We did go out on the boat last night after I got home from the Tea. Take care.

    1. Missy, it's always good to hear from you as well. Liberty loves to chew anything plastic, or paper, or fabric, or.... silly girl. But we love her.

  4. So many projects! We too have that. Jerry is harvesting now trying to get the rest of the corn out and then that will be finished. Then I am hoping our house will be worked on. We have the flooring for our kitchen - just got to get it in. We got our new couch and now we realize just how dirty our carpet is - I am seriously thinking of hiring someone to come and really clean them. Of course there is the roof...Most of this of course is on Jerry's shoulders - but one day at a time...it will all get done. I know you will be relieved when yours is all done!

As for that dog, how much has it cost to have Libby - with all of the "tearing up thing? I am sure it is all worth it!

    1. Yes, Liberty has cost us plenty and some of the damage she's done hasn't been replaced yet. I kept a running list at first, but it got to be too much to think about and is best forgotten. Between the vet bills for her urinary infections and spaying, and the first year of puppy food, plus the damage she's caused it's been several thousand dollars. Not kidding. But she's loved. We are seriously thinking of doing away with carpet and going with wood laminate flooring. It would stay so much cleaner...
She ruined our bedroom carpet when she was sick and we couldn't get it cleaned at all, even after several attempts. We cut out the damaged carpet and covered it with a throw rug. We're replacing it with wood flooring as well. That's the room we'll test ourselves on to decide if we want to do the job ourselves in the front room or hire someone else to do that job. It will probably be awhile before we can tackle it. We've got to get through with the painting project first.

  5. Ahhh, painting colors on white walls makes everything in the room look different and I am sure you are going to be so happy and wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I can totally relate to having a chewing puppy still. Will they ever grow out of it? Paige's chew toys of choice are little blocks of wood left in the garage after my crafting projects get cut and anything plastic, a spray paint can lid, cool whip containers, plastic bags pulled out of the garbage...you name it, she has chewed it. She will be 2 years old in December so hopefully she is, uh hmmm maturing? Love hearing from you and all your adventures. Take care my friend.

    1. Oh does Liberty love wood and plastic, and containers. She even grabs something out of the recycle bin once in awhile and thinks it's a toy. I love hearing from you as well. So far we're loving the new color and yes it does make a dramatic difference. We worked on it a bit this weekend, but this weekend was busy with other activities as well. We've got to finish that room before Thanksgiving. We're having Thanksgiving here this year with lots of company. Take care.
