Dry Lagoon

These photos are from Dry Lagoon,

a beach area north of Trinidad, Ca.

I'm not quite sure what this is,

but it may be the seed pods from

the Yellow Sand Verbena.

The perennial flower Abronia latifolia or Abronia arenaria (Menzies)^[1] is a species of sand-verbena known commonly as the coastal, or yellow sand-verbena. It is native to the west coast of North America, from southern California to the Canadian border.

The plant bears attractive neatly rounded heads of small, bright golden flowers. The individual flowers have no petals; rather, they are composed of yellow bracts forming a trumpet-shaped calyx about the stamens. It bears a small, winged fruit. The plant grows in succulent mats on sand or other coastal substrate. The roots are stout, fusiform and often several feet long. These roots are edible, traditionally eaten by the Chinook Indians. ^[1]

There's ice plant covered dunes to cross

between the parking area and one of the 

beaches in Trinidad, CA.

They were in bloom when we were there

earlier this month.

This was the sunset the night before the wedding.

I took way too many photos of the sun

sinking into the fog bank out on the horizon.

Couldn't help it though, it was so beautiful,

and very cold.

We're expecting 113 or 114 degrees tomorrow.

Oh, I just can't wait...

got married yesterday in beautiful Trinidad CA.

We were honored to attend and share in this beautiful day.

Little Bits

Granddaughter Katelyn, who is just

four years old had her first experience

with an ice cream truck.

The following day, she wanted Mama

to make a call and demand that the 

ice cream truck come back.

This is at their temporary neighborhood

which is a subdivision with enough

kids to make an ice cream truck owner happy.

Their own house is in an area where the

ice cream truck doesn't visit.

Their six month lease 

on their temporary home is up at the end of

this month.  They plan to camp out on their

property until their own house is finished,

and who knows when that will be.

Their home burned just before Thanksgiving.

The rebuild is taking way too long, I think.

Yes it's been way too hot.

I found a humming bird that seemed

to be resting a bit too long near the ground.

After awhile I went back to check on him,

and he was still hanging out in the same area.

I picked him up and it was obvious that he

had some sort of injury.  I thought it was

perhaps exhaustion, dehydration or something

 and it just needed to eat. 

 So I tried to place this very

light creature to perch on the hummingbird feeder.

It wouldn't grab on, so I tried putting it's beak

into the syrup to see if it would take some.

I don't think it worked.  I tried setting it upon

the feeder yet again and it fell to the ground.

I left it in a shaded spot under the feeder hoping

it would recover.  Other hummingbirds 

came to attack the little one and wouldn't leave

it alone.  So Rick took it to another location

and sheltered it so that the other birds 

would leave it alone.

The following morning it was dead as we 

expected it to be.  

We think it's wing was broken.

   

I planted a bed full of zinnias from seeds

earlier this spring.  This is the first one to bloom.

There's an orange/peach colored one out there

as well.

This is dinner

when it's way too hot to cook.

Recently we celebrated a big birthday,

one of those that ends in a zero...

We went out to dinner, and instead

of going to one of the same ole,

 same old places I wanted to go

someplace new to us.

Which meant we didn't 

have a clue where to go.

Rick started driving into town.

Meanwhile I tried using a phone app

to find someplace we haven't been to. 

It was a frustrating and useless exercise.

Then I remembered that we were 

getting close to

  a new restaurant where   

one of our favorite Japanese restaurants

used to be.  It is now a

 Pakistani  and Indian Cuisine 

restaurant called Yaadgar,

which means memory.

Would you be willing to try a 

completely new to you restaurant for 

a special occasion? 

We've tried Indian food before

at a different restaurant in town.

It wasn't that great, but our 

companions told us

to try it again at some other restaurant.  

There's a good one up in

 Ashland, Oregon for a more authentic

and flavorful experience but it's a bit

far to drive up there just for dinner.

So we tried Yaadgars and we liked it.

I don't know if it would please everyone,

but we liked it. 

This is naan, a delicious flat bread.

We ordered plain, but there's also garlic,

onion, and potato (Aloo) naan.

Zeera Rice

Basmatti rice cooked with cumin seeds.

Rick ordered the Lamb Tikka Boti.

Lamb cubes marinated in special spices and

baked in a Tandoori clay oven.

It was served with two bottles of sauce,

one a mint sauce, and the other was a 

tamarind sauce. Both sauces went well 

with the lamb.

I ordered Eggplant Bharta.

The menu says it's

  eggplant baked in an oven 

and then cooked in a creamy sauce.

I expected it to look very different

than this with identifiable chunks of

eggplant. But that was just my mistaken assumption.

This was delicious with exotic spices

that I couldn't identify.  I spread it on 

pieces of naan, and it was very good.

I'm so glad we were willing to

try something new.  I definitely

would like to go back to

enjoy other dishes

that sound  interesting. 

Besides their vegetarian offerings,

 they serve dishes made with chicken,

beef, lamb and goat.
