Sunday's Visit to Shasta Dam

Here's an unusual sight.
Water  is being released onto the spillway,
due to too much water in the lake.
Yeah!

They're releasing 50,000
Cubic Feet of water per Second.
35,000 CSF down the spillway,
and the rest  is flowing through the tubes,

 and into  turbines
 creating electricity.
For an idea of the size of these tubes.
You can drive a school bus inside them.

Hang on tight to your camera,
and look down from the dam.
It's very windy,
very cold,
and just starting to rain at this point.

Dizzy yet?
You should have heard the roar of the water
flowing through.  Here's a
view of the other side of the dam.
Lake level around 10 ~ 11 feet from the crest.

The osprey and eagles were circling.
This one is an osprey.  The eagle stayed
too far away for a decent photo.

It's going to be a good summer on the lake!
